What is Buprenorphine ?

Buprenorphine tablet is a sublingual (placed under the tongue) tablet used as medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder. Typically, buprenorphine tablet is only used short-term during the induction phase of treatment. But some people might continue on it for a longer period of time if their provider thinks it’s appropriate.

How buprenorphine works

Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist. It works by attaching to the same receptors in the brain as opioids, but less strongly. This means that it can help ease cravings and lower the risk for withdrawal symptoms in someone with opioid use disorder, but shouldn’t cause the same “high” as opioid medications.
